Telstra + Starlink – How is Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity changing the game?
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity. It might be a relatively new term but it’s soaring into popularity with Telstra’s partnership with Starlink helping to provide fast, reliable access for regional centres, enterprises, and is now available to small business and homes too.
What are LEOs and how do they work?
LEOs, or Low Earth Orbit Satellites sit above the earth’s surface at an altitude of approximately 160-2,000km which is much closer to the earth than other types of satellites.
What are the benefits of LEOs on connectivity?
The benefit of having these LEOS sitting lower to the earth is that latency (or time between sending and receiving signals) is much reduced, meaning that you get a faster response time. Also, because there are more of these satellites which individually cater to a smaller geographical range but collectively can cover a huge range, connection and download speeds are much faster.
How would this help businesses and those in regional areas?
Having better access to internet and voice connectivity services with lower latency in regional and remote areas has a huge impact on businesses. Being able to reliably connect to the internet means reliable financial transactions, customer service and communications. And for individuals it provides a dependable connection to work remotely from home.
How has Telstra been working with Starlink to implement this offering?
In November 2023, Telstra started rolling out the Telstra Enterprise Starlink Internet service for its enterprise customers. After huge success and quick adoption of the technology, Telstra are now (since September 2024) offering Satellite Internet and Voice services powered by Starlink to SMBs, as well as regional and urban home addresses too.
