A Corporate comparison of ChatGPT and Microsoft CoPilot.
At the end of 2022, a new piece of technology that was once reserved for serious tech-heads became mainstream. Dare we say that it has heralded its own industrial revolution? This tech has infiltrated our everyday lives, from Linkedin profiles, to emails, to corporate organisation, tenders and even blog posts (very meta we know). This technology is, of course, artificial intelligence – or as many commonly refer to it, Open AI’s – Chat GPT. Since 2022, a whole slew of similar tools have emerged, Microsoft CoPilot, Google’s Gemini, and Meta AI to name a few, but with more and more of us relying on this technology for work and potentially sensitive work documents we have to consider the security and privacy around these applications. In this article we consider the differences between Chat GPT and Microsoft CoPilot and why the latter may be a better option for corporate data protection.
While Chat GPT and Microsoft CoPilot are both built using the same technology (Open AI) there are differences in their functionality, their features and most importantly – how they handle your data.
Both of these applications use NLP (Natural Language Processing) and LLMs (Language Learning Models) to generate text off the back of an input helping the user to answer questions and write. What does this mean? Basically the NLP’s function is to understand and generate human-like language and the LLM is trained on masses of data to try and predict the next words or phrases. Because LLMs use provided data to expand their training, this raises the issue as to whether your organisation’s data is being used to service other queries.
Microsoft CoPilot has commercial data protection and does not store or share your data with any third parties. It also uses end to end encryption to help ensure that your data is kept safe. The other advantage is that you can select which sources it will reference to assist you, eg. your own data or from verified and trusted sources. ChatGPT on the other hand is publicly based so your confidential data may end up being used to assist with other queries – opening your company up to potential security risk.
Another benefit of using CoPilot for work is that it integrates seamlessly with all of the Microsoft network of applications. So if you need help organising a Teams meeting, or taking minutes in Word, sharing important Excel documents across Outlook – CoPilot will be able to assist and integrate in a safe and secure way.
AI has revolutionised the way we work, our productivity and also the types of tasks we can focus on now which is exciting. The important thing to remember is that with this comes a responsibility to be careful with corporate data and where it’s being stored and used. At Insite we would recommend our customers consider Microsoft CoPilot as a helpful and more secure tool for their organisations.
